大熊求职记

大熊啊,胖乎乎的,又懒又馋。早上一觉要睡到12点。吃过brunch,外面阳光明媚,晒
的人昏昏欲睡。大熊想不如睡个午觉好了,有道是磨刀不误砍柴功。于是磨刀。。。一
觉醒来,一看,哇,都3点了。反正都已经三点了,估计也干不了什么,不如泡网吧,
晚上再好好学习,有道是磨刀不误砍柴功。。。泡网到头昏,手机响起:“喂,大熊啊
,打球去”。于是被人拖去打球。。。打球归来,一看都10点了,反正已经都10点了,
不如看片吧,明天早点起来好好学习也一样。有道是,磨刀不误砍(台下飞来西红柿臭
鸡蛋无数)。。。

呵呵,言归正传。大熊嘛,是相对大牛而言啦。大熊求职记,是给千千万万奋战在求职
第一线的屡败屡战的兄弟姐妹打气的。列位看官自觉得不是大熊而是大牛,需参看“大
牛求职记”,相信这个买买提版上有很多。

大熊的背景是CS PHD在读,偏僻山村大学,二流专业排名(系排名大概30-40),
information retrieval和data mining方向。做过个intern。基本没什么好的文章。自
觉得找academy没什么希望,于是focus在工业界。评良心说,CS是最好找工作的专业之
一。然而,大熊盲目乐观地估计了形式,加上信息闭塞走了许多冤枉路。从大熊开始准
备简历,到拿到第一个offer,差不多前后接近4个月,旷日持久。感谢老板基本让俺脱
产求职。这里把大熊的一些教训和体会(不能算经验)总结一下。希望能有所裨益。稍
后,大熊会为大家奉献一个算法面试题的九阴真经,系大熊在面试准备过程中将收集到
的200多算法题分门别类整理,参考网上的解答讨论,去伪存真,倾注心血而成。因为
大熊性子慢又比较懒,所以列位看官千万莫急。


(一)Timing
大熊求职体会最深的一点就是timing了。工业界和学术界,都有自己的时间线。所以在
求职之前,需要搞清楚的第一个问题就是何时开始求职。因为广大的F1有H1-B的申请问
题,所以从这点上说春天开始工作比秋天开始工作合理。每个公司都有自己的招人季节
,虽说大公司是全年hire,但是他们的节奏尤其清晰。大熊感觉在新人还没消化之前,
这时候投简历往往会石沉大海。因为去年(06年)10月,11月左右招人形式很不错,就
天真的以为07年年初仍然会保持旺盛的招人势头。以为找工作嘛,投了简历就有无数的
人八抬大轿来抗大熊去onsite面试。于是想想一个月应该足够了啦。2月开始准备简历
材料。2月底开始投,估计3月总该搞定了吧。没想到简历投出去就如石沉大海,基本清
一色都是自动应答。等了1个月基本还是杳无音讯,于是慌了爪子了。改简历,再投,
托人refer,内部推荐。。。能使的都使了。只要看看买买提,就可以发现当时谈论面
试的频率非常之低,和去年底不可同日而语。加上各个公司似乎都在忙于新进员工的培
训,H1-B申请之类,似乎并不急于新一轮招人计划。直到5月份开始,大熊才感觉到解
冻了。才有各种各样的公司开始搭理大熊。新一轮的招人热潮才开始。所以,就此说来
,招人的高潮似乎出现在10月和5月前后。考虑到大公司的HR反应速度比较慢,提前1个
半月投简历是必须的。

(二)Resume
大熊开始非常不重视resume的书写技巧。觉得这个东西,一则是短,业界一般要求1页
,最多不能超过2页。这么短的东西还非常八股。比如education background,
publication,基本找个example照葫芦画瓢就可以了。把这些填上,剩下的experience
也就只有几行好写。所以嘛,花个半天时间写写就足够了。后来大熊才逐渐意识到
resume的重要性。

首先,是如何书写的问题。要谈如何书写,必须要知道这些公司如何使用简历。试想,
这些大公司每天都可能收到上千份简历(这里有很多重复的),HR是没有足够的人力资
源去一个个阅读的,这里让大家失望了。所以,大公司一般都有一个网上投递系统,让
你online submit简历。然后,那些recruiter会根据工作的具体要求,从这些online简
历中搜索出他们要的东西来。哈哈,这就是大熊的本行了,信息检索。对,如何提高你
的简历出现的机会呢?第一,要出现尽可能多的关键词。比如,很多简历都有个
keyword section,或者可以放个skill或者expertise section,放上你熟悉的技能。
比如大熊的就是information retrieval, data mining, machine learning, pattern
recognition之类。而且,很多公司的online 系统都要求大家submit纯文本的简历,这
个用意也在此。因为这些文本往往是用于给他们的底层检索系统作index的,而他们的
系统不能直接索引word和pdf之类。第二,要重复出现关键词。关键词不是说出现一次
就可以,因为大部分的全文检索系统,都是按照词频作机械的相关度排序的。所以在
keyword和experience里多次出现一个关键词,是对你的简历的排序是帮助的。第三,
要经常更新简历和status,这点在买买提上被反复强调过。HR的检索系统,往往是根据
时间倒排的,也就是“后进先出”。越新的简历出现的几率越高。最后,就是address
。这个是道听途说。你的地址和公司的面试地点越接近,公司的面试成本也就越低。这
就是为什么大家说对IT公司要填加州地址的缘故。这样你的onsite机会将大大高于别人
。等recruiter把你的简历给HM,HM并不清楚也不care你在哪里。至少这时候,你的简
历有机会暴露在HM面前。不过,大熊并没有把地址改成加州。而且真正有实力的大公司
可能也未必在乎这点花销。感谢lebice帮大熊修改简历,前后出了6,7版,现在的版本
确实比开始强太多。

其次,是如何投递的问题。On campus recruiting速度快,往往可以直接安排onsite面
试。这个无疑是大家的第一选择。不过,象大熊所在的学校的CS,充其量也只是二流。
这时候的on campus recruiting event非常有限。这时候迫不得已,得自己投简历了。
IT业内有个不成文的规矩,就是employee referrer。自己在网上直接投基本是石沉大
海。不过,大熊觉得即便是employee referrer也未必就有很多机会。因为归根到底,
employee referrer也是要通过HR和recruiter处理的,没有个1,2个月你的简历根本没
机会送到HM那里。这样,最直接的方法就是托人直接递HM。发动一切能发动的社会关系
,同学,同学的平方,同学的立方。总之能捅到HM就成。


(三)面试题
CS的面试题无非如下几类:behavior,algorithm, brain teaser, coding, job
related。Behavior问题一般大家自己准备就可以了,大熊感觉IT公司没有很强盗
behavior问题,和金融企业不同。Brain teaser现在也问的越来越少,切以为那个微软
100题用来准备brain teaser足够了。Coding问题MS强调比较多,尤其是边界条件
coding,往往都设计非常多的特殊情况,非常容易出错。不过这个有套路,可以突击。
大熊会在后续的算法总结里一起顺便总结下边界条件的coding问题。各种算法问题可以
说是大公司面试的最爱。不过适合面试的算法问题也是非常有限的,往往集中在XOR,
Hash,BST,动态规划这些问题上。太复杂的也不适合在短时间内得到答案。Career
Cup是个很好的资源,可惜大熊知道的太晚。job related问题就五花八门,操作系统,
编程语言的类库,太多了。这个基本上是知识性的没法总结准备。只好靠平时积累。而
且对各个不同的pos关心的内容也不一样。这里大熊想提的就是合作精神。可惜大熊所
在的系实在太小,今年夏天就大熊1个人在准备毕业找工作。如果有个3、5个人,可以
合作总结一下一些知识点。比如Java,design pattern,如果让大熊来讲,估计3小时
足够了。但是自己看书,需要不止30小时。所以合作真的很重要。如果有条件,可以搞
几个人一起交流讨论一些问题,可以达到事半功倍的效果。大熊在这里就不谈具体的面
试题了,会总结在算法题总汇里。


(四)一些公司的面试体会
评心而论,大熊的面试经历都算愉快。面试官也都非常nice。尤其中国人,非常友好。
没有遇到大家常说的苦瓜脸。大熊第一个面的是行业新贵G公司。面试的问题比较偏算
法和智力题。大熊平时最怕动脑筋了,要是比睡觉多好啊。加上毕竟第一个面试,准备
不充分,被羞辱了。于是恶补算法和智力题。第二个面的是金融大亨G公司,面试的都
是一些design pattern和犄角旮旯的Java编程问题,类似茴香豆的茴字写法之类的。大
熊与之争执了几句,话不投机,当场谈崩。第三个面的是老牌软件巨头M公司。面试的
全是鸡毛蒜皮的coding,需要考虑边界条件的那种,比如链表头啊,尾啊,基数,双数
。傻眼之后挂了。于是恶补边界条件coding问题,把各种链表倒过来插进去玩了个烂熟
。第四个面的是老牌.com Y公司,面试的问题比较偏算法和brain。被轰炸了一整天后
后终于搞定一个offer。第五个准备面的是老牌打印机制造商H公司的lab。不过因为Y公
司的offer拖不到那时候,大熊就乐呵呵的从了。从3月投简历到6月,也差不多3-4个月
时间。不过这几个月还是学到了不少知识,特别是耐性。从东海岸到西海岸也飞了3次
。Anyway, 好事多磨,预祝这个版上的非大牛的xdjm都能持之以恒,失败并不可怕,要
坚信offer一定会有的。

有一天,我在看电视。

记住了一个小故事。

故事是这样的:每当照相的时候,我们总会喊“一、二、三”就按下快门,结果却发现有些人眯眼了,因为在准备拍到拍的过程中有些人撑得太久了。 于是照相的人换一种思路,让大家先闭眼,等到念到“三”的时候,齐刷刷的睁开眼睛。

漂亮! 这回真的大家都睁着眼睛,而且炯炯有神!

好一个逆向思维,我喜欢。

于是我开始想到自己的境遇,想到他们曾经对我说,这里不适合你,你在这里没前途。

当初我更多的是不理解,甚至带着对那里的一点恨。

恨他们放逐了一个有为青年。

可是,自从看了那个小故事后,我告诉自己,我要证明他们是对的,所以我必须在另外一个地方取得更好的发展。

只是为了证明他们是对的,所以我必须更加努力。

谁都可以放逐你,唯有你自己不能放逐你自己。

我知道,有一天,我一定会10倍于现在的感谢那个地方,感谢他们让我明白我真的有更适合的地方更适合的平台。

爱与恨只有一线之隔。有时我们会因为深爱而在失去后痛恨。

还好我没有,还好我很快的走出来。

因为我深深的知道,恨一个人,就是让他当了自己的主人。

从今以后,我只做一件事,那就是我要不断的努力,不是去证明你们的错,而是证明你们的对。

老师以前曾经跟我说过,我们来到这个世界是为了建设社会,而不是为了破坏社会。

放心老师,我明白的。

1924年四五月间,泰戈尔访华期间,给了徐林接触的机会,一起接待进出会场,又一起演出英文戏剧,又恢复了昔日的情感。5月20日,泰戈尔一行离开北京 去太原,徐志摩陪同前往。车站上,送行的人很多,林徽因也在里面。车快开动了,徐志摩正在写一封给林徽因的信,尚未写完,车已蠕动,徐志摩要冲过去递给车 下的林徽因,泰戈尔的秘书恩厚之见他太伤感,一把抢了过来替他藏起。后来志摩再没提起此事,恩厚之就把此保存起来带回英国。直到70年代,梁锡华去访问, 让梁看了原件。信里写的是:

  我真不知道我要说的是什么话,我已经好几次提起笔来想写,但是每次总是写不成篇。这两日我的头脑只是 昏沉沉的,开着眼闭着眼都只见大前晚模糊的凄清的月色,照着我们不愿意的车辆,迟迟地向荒野里退缩。离别!怎么的能叫人相信?我想着了就要发疯,这么多的 丝,谁能割得断?我的眼前又黑了!

阅 读林徽因,滋生出一份感佩,惊奇世间果然有这样的女人,集才气、集美质、集傲岸,也集热爱与事业于一体。仰止当世,光照来人。如果不是生不逢时,如果她不 是多病的女人,如果她的诗作文集有人编纂整理,或许今人读到的也许会是一个真正的女诗人,读到的一定会是一个近代建筑史上的泰斗。

林徽因“喜欢热闹,喜欢被人称羡”,这一点也可以从林徽因在文学沙龙上的高谈阔论得到印证。费正清晚年回忆林徽因 就曾说,“她是具有创造才华的作家、诗人,是一个具有丰富的审美能力和广博智力活动兴趣的妇女,而且她交际起来又洋溢着迷人的魅力。在这个家,或者她所在 的任何场合,所有在场的人总是全都围绕着她转”。(费正清《费正清对华回忆录》)

然而,也恰恰就是这样的林徽因,既耐得住学术的清冷和寂寞,又受得了生活的艰 辛和贫困。沙龙上作为中心人物被爱慕者如众星捧月般包围的是她,穷乡僻壤、荒寺古庙中不顾重病、不惮艰辛与梁思成考察古建筑的也是她;早年以名门出身经历 繁华,被众人称羡的是她,战争期间繁华落尽困居李庄,亲自提了瓶子上街头打油买醋的还是她;青年时旅英留美、深得东西方艺术真谛,英文好得令费慰梅赞叹的 是她,中年时一贫如洗、疾病缠身仍执意要留在祖国的又是她。这样的林徽因,在朋友间引起的,又是另外一种评说,李健吾抗战期间闻听林徽因虽罹患重病而不离 开祖国时,激动地说:“她是林长民的女公子,梁启超的儿媳。其后,美国聘请他们夫妇去讲学,他们拒绝了,理由是应该留在祖国吃苦。”(李健吾:《林徽 因》)

这样的林徽因,也许才是最可纪念并且最应该为后世所记住的。
